An Introduction for Teachers

This short video explains what the Get Real Sessions are, how they work and how they could benefit you and your school.

Get Real Sessions are mapped to the RSE Guidance and have been created to support schools in providing comprehensive and consistent RSE from years 7 to 11, with an emphasis on choice, tolerance, agency and responsibility.
Each session is 50 minutes in length and consists of a 15-20 minute teaching video and three fully prepared class activities. The session video provides the structure and teaching for the session and is paused for each of the three class activities. The class activities are led by the class teacher, using the teacher notes provided, and give opportunities for peer learning, focus on specific class needs and further exploration of the session topic.
Complete teacher notes are provided for each session, so there is no planning or preparation required. The class teacher just needs to print or download a copy of the teacher notes before the lesson and have login details ready to access the session video.

Why invest your RSE budget in the Get Real Sessions?

Equipping Students to Make Healthier Relationship Choices - The Get Real Sessions focus on having healthier relationships, whatever the topic - healthier relationships with ourselves and with other people.  Each Get Real Session ends with a challenge for the week, to help students make actual steps towards healthier lifestyles and relationships.

Positively Affecting Whole School Culture - The Get Real Sessions provide consistent RSE for every student from year 7 to 11, with central themes of building self esteem, respect, tolerance and healthy communication. When these messages are consistently taught to a school community it can affect the atmosphere and culture within the school.

Saving Teachers Time - The Get Real Sessions save teachers time as there is no planning required for the sessions. As well as this, equipping students to have healthier relationships in their lives will reduce the additional support students often need when relationships go wrong.

Improving Individual Student Outcomes - The Get Real Sessions encourage individual agency, aiming to build students' self confidence and to help them recognise the value that they have. The way we interact with other people can affect what we achieve, so consistently giving students the tools they need to choose healthier relationships can help them to focus on their learning and reach their potential.

Providing Staff Training - The teaching videos model Relationship and Sex education teaching in an inclusive, appropriate and factual way, training staff through this modelling and giving them confidence to teach a subject that some teachers find challenging or uncomfortable.

Spiral Curriculum Mapped to Statutory RSE Guidance

Get Real Sessions have been developed as a spiral curriculum mapped to the statutory RSE guidance. The 4 modules, when used together, cover all aspects of the RSE guidance and the majority of the Health Education guidance for years 7 - 11*.

As each module consists of 4 sessions per year group, schools have the flexibility to use them whilst also responding to specific teaching needs that arise and covering the PSHE and remaining Health Education curriculum.

Get Real Sessions are built around the key themes of the guidance, providing age appropriate sessions that focus on healthy relationships, mental wellbeing, resilience and understanding the law. They aim to facilitate students to get support and help when they need it and to become happy and successful members of society.

*Suggested resources to support with remaining Health Education Guidance Points.
